The Importance of Visual Communication

Communication is one of the most important components of human interaction. It is the way people can share information from person to person. There are various forms of communication such as visual, verbal, written and audio. One form that is common is visual communication. The aspect of visual communication allows someone to gather information and the meaning behind a concept with symbols, motion pictures etc.Visual communication is a great component of branding and marketing and can be useful for a company. Some people may gravitate towards visual communication because of the way it can capture the eye. It can also help people to understand the meanings behind a specific brand better than other forms of communication. Different colors, patterns, symbols have meanings that people can understand more easily than other forms of communication. It is beneficial for marketing strategies for a company because of how easy it is for people to learn the meanings behind symbols. Colors can convey certain emotions in the viewers/consumers. Red can be interpreted as the meaning of love, anger, danger or courage. Blue can be interpreted as sadness, calmness, peace or wisdom. Green is interpreted as good luck, good fortune, health or nature. These are a few examples of how visual communication is a necessary tool for a company to use. The musician known as Prince is a representation of great visual communication. When he broke free from his old label controlling his music he needed a way for him to establish himself as a brand. After a long dispute with his label he made what is known as the “love symbol” which allowed him to gain control of what he wanted to release while staying in the means of his contract. The brand Oreo’s has established themselves as “Milk’s favorite cookie” with outstanding branding. The Oreo logo is blue and white and the O is shaped like the cookie. They have commercials showing their chocolate wafer cookie with creme in the middle being dunked into milk. They also show families enjoying the cookie, making it marketable for people to have in their household. Over the years, they have shown to be one of the top most frequently bought cookies from grocery stores. The brand Charmin has established themselves as a top brand for toilet tissue because of their visual communication. In the commercials the Charmin bear would show how “soft” the toilet tissue was by rubbing it on his face. They also explain that it is so soft that it will be difficult to only use a few sheets and how much he enjoys it. The visual components make the commercial easy to persuade someone to buy the product. These three are examples of how beneficial visual communication can impact a brand. The colors, patterns and visual message can help brands get their point across more effectively. It magnetically allures consumers to buy products quickly without much thought. Visuals can be aesthetically pleasing as well as distinguishing a brand from other competitors.
